Advertising in
Destination Pine Island
Businesses waste a lot of money on advertising for many reasons, but mostly because
they don’t understand basic advertising rules. Don’t buy misleading circulation numbers
and don’t buy fancy sales pitches.
Focus on these three questions-
Is this what my potential customers have in their hands?
How long is it in their hands for?
Will they use this to find me?
Shelf Life- Newspapers have their place in society, and they are very good at what
they do, but when was the last time you picked up a newspaper to look at ads? The
shelf life of a newspaper is almost always less than a day, usually less than 2 hours.
Shelf Life is a key feature in paper advertising. DPI has a shelf life of 3 months
and people keep it that long or longer because the information doesn’t get old, and
it doesn’t go bad or expire. Our first goal was to create a paper that ends up in
luggage, something that visitors take home to plan their next trip and to show friends
where they were.
Cost- Pine Island has roughly 30,000 visitors yearly and our ad cost to reach them
for 3 months is cheaper than most newspapers charge for one day. We’ve created a
paper that can be afforded year round, and even out of season we have enough visitors
to move several thousand papers per quarter. Our smallest ad is twice the size of
a business card and budgets out to less than $20 a week.
Popularity- DPI generated huge popularity overnight mostly because Pine Island has
never had a visitor’s guide. Our island has a great weekly paper and a quarterly
real estate guide, but papers attract news-goers and real estate guides only attract
people looking for real estate. Neither have a long Shelf Life. We custom built DPI
by sitting with tourists and visitors for months and finding out what they wanted
and needed in a guide. The feedback has been great and we add new information to
each issue!
Web Presence- Finding things on the internet is mainstream. It’s very important to
maintain a strong web presence, especially in the tourist/visitor industry. Our island
real estate guide has been around for years yet their website has not been updated
since 1995.
Our website was built in February of 2009. On May 20 we looked at the statistics
and had over 42,000 server requests. A month later, on June 22, we looked again and
the server requests jumped to a staggering 144,000. Our staff is excellent at search
engine optimization and we update the site monthly. Free weblinks are available to
all of our paper advertising customers.
“The man who stops advertising to save money is like the man who stops the clock
to save time.”
Thomas Jefferson
